Shelby County was established in 1836, and for 30 years Shelbyville was the county seat.
Shelbyville, however, was not quick to give up its claim as the county seat or its county records. As such, Parker drove an ox cart to the courthouse door in Shelbyville one night and simply took them. The records were then placed under armed guard in a log cabin near the geographic center of the county. This is how the city of Center was born.
A courthouse was built soon after, but all its records were lost when it burned in 1882. The courthouse that was built in its place has become one of the jewels of Center.

The city was incorporated in 1893, but was later dissolved and reorganized under a charter.
6 public schools and 1 private school provided education to area students.
Higher education is offered through Stephen F. Austin State University, located 30 miles outside of town.
Alternatives within 60 miles or less include Angelina College, Louisiana State University - Shreveport and Bossier Parish Community College.
Shelby Regional Medical Center serves local health care needs.
Outdoor recreation is a major draw in the area of Center. From birding to tournament fishing to biking, hiking and more, you can experience nature in a number of new ways here. Nearby Toledo Bend Lake is one of the highlights of our natural attractions. This 205,000-acre body offers visitors the opportunity to fish, boat and camp along 1,200 miles of shoreline.
Annual traditions bring a lot of character to the Center community. The What-A-Melon Festival & Old Time Marketplace is held every 2nd weekend of July. Attendees enjoy live entertainment, carnival rides and many watermelon-related competitions. In addition, the East Texas Poultry Festival occurs each fall. It features a parade, music and dancing, arts and crafts, and lots of great food.
